#2e: Understand the role of consultation and use it appropriately for ethical decision making.
Artifact Description:
Ethics Interview Notes: To gain a perspective on how ethics plays a role in practice and how ethical dilemmas may manifest in a plethora of ways, I interviewed College Access Now staff members to learn from their own practices. My notes shows my thought process and some of the questions I asked during my interviews.
Artifact Relevance:
Through my interviews with College Access Now staff members I was able to consult them with example situations and how ethics has played a role in their own professional career. I learned that ethical decision making takes place in many forms and happens on a daily occasion. In the past, I was only aware of ethical dilemmas that were more obvious issues such as discrimination, versus what may be a seen less of an issue, such as adding an hour to a time-sheet or altering data from a survey. I also learned how ethics can shape the work one does in an organization, such as if the Board of Directors own goals do not align with personal values. My task supervision's emphasis on ethics and double-checking situations, I had not previously thought to check has surfaced ethics as a forefront priority as I have continued my practice. I know as a social worker it is my responsibility to take the time to double check any questionable decisions or actions, I make or witness in the organization. I plan to continuously consult with others the NASW Code of Ethics and possible dilemmas.
